COVID-19 Government and International Response: May 25, 2020


Global COVID-19 cases have reached 5,560,868, up from 5,264,205 at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. Canada now reports 85,104 cases, up from 82,413 cases of COVID-19 on Friday. Ontario reports 25,904 cases, up from 24,628 cases on Friday.

The growth rate of new cases in the province continues to remain under 2%, with 404 (1.6%) new cases reported since yesterday. Ontario’s Health Minister Christine Elliott told reporters today that not respecting physical distancing guidelines during the Mother’s Day weekend likely contributed to the Province’s uptick in new cases.

Of the province’s total cases, 19,698 have been resolved (76%) and there have been 2,102 deaths (8.1%). The province has now completed 619,539 tests and reports 3,883 tests are currently under investigation. More information here.

Today, Minister of Small Business, Export Promotion and International Trade Mary Ng announced that the Government of Canada will support the launch of a four-week hotline service called the Business Resilience Service. This service will help entrepreneurs and small business owners in need of financial planning advice, particularly those who may not have access to an accountant. The service will also be open to not-for-profit organizations and charities.

The hotline is a national, bilingual service operated by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. As of today, small business owners with pressing financial needs can call 1-866-989-1080 (toll-free) seven days a week, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. (ET). More information here.

Prime Minister Trudeau announced that applications are now being accepted for Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance (CECRA) for small businesses.

Over the course of the program, property owners will reduce rent by at least 75 per cent for the months of April and May (retroactive), and June, for their small business tenants. CECRA will cover 50 per cent of the rent, with the tenant paying up to 25 per cent and the property owner forgiving at least 25 per cent. More information here.

After a week of declining daily testing, yesterday Premier Ford’s announced that the Province will share its “detailed testing strategy” in the coming days. The Premier’s plan will be to test hot spots and various sectors, but also for more people to get tested generally. He said: I’m asking the people of Ontario, if you are worried if you have COVID-19, or that you’ve been exposed to someone who has COVID-19, even if you are not showing symptoms, please go get a test. The Ministry of Long-Term Care has issued Mandatory Management Orders appointing local hospitals to temporarily manage two long-term care homes for 90 days. Southlake Regional Health Centre will temporarily manage River Glen Haven Nursing Home in Sutton and Humber River Hospital will temporarily manage Downsview Long Term Care in North York. Today, Mayor John Tory announced that a City of Toronto staff report scheduled for consideration by City Council later this week proposes that key parts of the cycling network be expanded, through accelerated installation of routes in the council-approved Cycling Network Plan, as part of the ActiveTO program.

The report released today asks Council to approve the installation of approximately 25 kilometres of new bikeways, for a total of approximately 40 kilometres of on-street cycling lanes approved for accelerated installation in 2020.
