WHAT TO KNOW
Global COVID-19 cases have reached 6,663,365, up from 6,519,303 at 3:30 p.m. yesterday. Canada now reports 93,700 cases, up from 93,040 cases of COVID-19 yesterday. Ontario reports 29,403 cases, up from 29,047 cases yesterday.
The growth rate of new cases in the province continues to remain under 2%, with 356 (1.2%) new cases reported since yesterday. Of the province’s total cases, 23,208 have been resolved (78.9%) and there have been 2,357 deaths (8%). The province has now completed 786,323 tests and reports 12,760 tests are currently under investigation. More information here.

FEDERAL
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson hosted a virtual summit for world leaders and philanthropists including Bill and Melinda Gates. The gathering focused on ensuring poor countries have ready access to a COVID-19 vaccine when one is developed. Prime Minister Trudeau urged that a vaccine must be shared by the world to eliminate the disease. More information here.
Today, Prime Minister Trudeau announced that seniors eligible for the Old Age Security (OAS) pension and the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) will receive their special one-time, tax-free payment during the week of July 6. Through this measure and others, the government is providing nearly $900 more for single seniors and more than $1,500 for senior couples, on top of their existing benefits, to help these vulnerable Canadians with extra costs during the pandemic.
Seniors eligible for the OAS pension will receive a payment of $300, and those also eligible for the GIS will receive an additional $200, for a total of $500. Allowance recipients will also receive $500. This $2.5 billion in financial support will help Canadian seniors cover increased costs caused by COVID-19, and give them greater financial security in this time of crisis. More information here.
PROVINCIAL
The Ontario government has appointed Dr. Jane Philpott as the special advisor to support the design and implementation of the new Ontario Health Data Platform (formerly known as PANTHR). This data platform will provide recognized researchers and health system partners with access to anonymized health data that will allow them to better detect, plan, and respond to COVID-19. As well, this platform will support projects from the Ontario COVID-19 Rapid Research Fund. More information here.
The Ministry of Long-Term Care is appointing William Osler Health System as interim manager at Woodbridge Vista Care Community long-term care home in Vaughan, Ontario.
The government says, despite receiving hospital support, Woodbridge Vista Care Community has been unable to contain the spread of COVID-19 and believes these steps will enable a rigorous management structure to help contain the spread of the disease and assist in returning their home to normal operations. TORONTO
Today, Mayor John Tory launched CaféTO a quick-start program that will make it easier for restaurant and bar owners to open patios, to expand them, and to access additional space for physical distancing and for that matter revenue generation during the summer months ahead.
The program will provide more outdoor dining areas by identifying space in the public right-of-way and expediting the current application and permitting process for sidewalk cafés and parklets. More information here.
This follows yesterday’s announcement by Mayor Tory that City of Toronto street food vendors, food trucks and ice cream trucks can resume operations just in time for this year’s summer vending season. For everyone’s safety, all operators must adhere to physical distancing requirements for the public and provide proper health and safety measures for their staff.
Residents visiting street food vendors, food or ice cream trucks should maintain a distance of two metres or six feet from others while waiting in line. Food is for take away and can be enjoyed at home or in the park.
There are currently 177 non-motorized food carts and 325 motorized refreshment vehicles, including 75 hot dog carts licensed by the City. More information here.
