COVID-19 Government and International Response: September 2, 2020

WHAT TO KNOW

Global COVID-19 cases have reached 25,775,905, up from 25,250,638 at 3:30 p.m. on Monday.  Canada now reports 129,425 cases, up from 127,940 cases of COVID-19 on Monday. Ontario reports 42,554 cases, up from 42,309 cases on Monday.

The growth rate of new cases in the province is still under 1%, with 133 (0.3%) new cases reported since yesterday. Of the province’s total cases, 38,506 have been resolved (90.5%) and there have been 2,812 deaths (6.6%). The province has now completed 3,013,892 tests and reports 18,273 tests are currently under investigation. More information here.

PROVINCIAL

As the province safely and gradually reopens and more people return to work, the Ontario government is partnering with public transit operators across the province to implement measures that will ensure transit workers and passengers can safely and confidently take public transit. The government has distributed comprehensive health and safety guidance documents and is providing up to $2 billion to 110 municipalities with transit systems as part of the Safe Restart Agreement. TORONTO

On August 31, Mayor John Tory, Medical Officer of Health Dr. Eileen de Villa, City Manager Chris Murray and City Councillor and Chair of Toronto Board of Health Joe Cressy, presented the City’s COVID-19 Resurgence Plan, which outlines priorities and associated actions that the City will implement in the event of a resurgence of COVID-19. The five priority areas of the City’s response are:

• Implement public health measures
• Support vulnerable populations
• Support City employees
• Mitigate the impact to Toronto’s economy
• Ensure the resiliency of City services and a coordinated response
