COVID-19 Government and International Response: August 21, 2020

WHAT TO KNOW

Global COVID-19 cases have reached 22,704,949, up from 21,896,155 at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday.  Canada now reports 123,873 cases, up from 123,154 cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday. Ontario reports 41,179 cases, up from 440,972 cases on Wednesday.

The growth rate of new cases in the province is still under 1%, with 131 (0.3%) new cases reported since yesterday. Of the province’s total cases, 37,397 have been resolved (90.8%) and there have been 2,796 deaths (6.8%). The province has now completed 2,710,918 tests and reports 19,941 tests are currently under investigation. More information here.

FEDERAL

On August 20, the Canadian government announced changes to the Employment Insurance (EI) program and new income support benefits. They also announced that in preparation for this transition and to ensure support continues for Canadians whose employment has been impacted by the pandemic, the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) will be extended by an additional four weeks to a maximum of 28 weeks. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Government of Canada announced up to $1.1 million from the Low Carbon Economy Fund to support the City of Toronto in reducing emissions from their ambulances and emergency paramedic response units. The funding comes from the Champions stream of the Government of Canada’s Low Carbon Economy Challenge, which invests in projects that reduce carbon pollution, save money, and create good jobs. TORONTO

On August 20, City of Toronto Mayor John Tory announced that 45 live music venues will receive a combined $1.7 million in property tax relief to support Toronto’s live music industry and address the unprecedented challenges that are threatening live music venues across the city.
