COVID-19 Government and International Response: August 6, 2020

WHAT TO KNOW

Global COVID-19 cases have reached 18,793,522, up from 18,263,542 at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday.  Canada now reports 118,187 cases, up from 117,031 cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday. Ontario reports 39,809 cases, up from 39,628 cases on Tuesday.

The growth rate of new cases in the province is still under 1%, with 95 (0.2%) new cases reported since yesterday. Of the province’s total cases, 35,906 have been resolved (90.2%) and there have been 2,783 deaths (7%). The province has now completed 2,321,297 tests and reports 19,292 tests are currently under investigation. More information here.

FEDERAL

The Government of Canada is aggressively pursuing the purchase and development of COVID-19 vaccines, treatments, and related supplies to protect Canadians and is working to strengthen Canada’s biomanufacturing sector. On August 5, the Government of Canada, announced several measures being taken to secure a future supply of COVID-19 vaccine and therapies. The federal government unveiled the members of the COVID-19 Vaccine Task Force, who are advising the Government on how best to support vaccine research in Canada and help ensure Canadian leadership in vaccine development, related bio-manufacturing and international partnerships to secure access for Canadians to safe and effective products. On August 5, the Honourable Catherine McKenna, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, announced new steps to help provinces and territories deal with the pressures brought on by the COVID-19 health and economic crisis. The Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program is being adjusted so that provinces and territories can use federal funding to act quickly on a wider range of more pandemic-resilient infrastructure projects. Under a new COVID-19 Resilience funding stream worth up to $3.3 billion, projects will be eligible for a significantly larger federal cost share – up to 80 per cent for provinces, municipalities and not-for-profit organizations in provinces, and raising it to 100 per cent for territorial and Indigenous projects designated under the new stream. PROVINCIAL

The Ontario Government is investing $1.5 million through the new Tourism Economic Development Recovery Fund and offering promotional incentives at provincial attractions to help the province’s tourism industry and welcome back visitors after the COVID-19 pandemic. The fund will support projects that develop innovative tourism products and experiences, drive private sector tourism investments, workforce development, and support tourism operators to learn more through tourism industry associations. The Ontario Government is investing $83 million through the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) to provide grants to help eligible non-profit organizations, including food banks, child and youth programs and Royal Canadian Legion branches, recover from COVID-19 and continue the delivery of vital programming in their communities. TORONTO

Beginning today, new measures come into effect that require masks or face coverings to be worn in common areas in apartments and condominiums and additional requirements for food and drink establishments. More information here.

The City of Toronto’s CaféTO program, which now supports more than 600 restaurants city-wide with increased dining capacity, will close registration to new applicants on Tuesday, August 11 at noon. The program is scheduled to end for the season on November 15. Since Toronto entered Stage 3 of the provincial reopening plan, fewer restaurants have been applying for CaféTO. After Tuesday, program staff will continue helping local businesses by rolling-out remaining approved locations while supporting hundreds of businesses with existing CaféTO locations.
