COVID-19 Government and International Response: September 11, 2020

WHAT TO KNOW

Global COVID-19 cases have reached 27,890,579, up from 27,365,952 at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Canada now reports 134,294 cases, up from 132,142 cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday. Ontario reports 43,855 cases, up from 43,536 cases on Tuesday.

The growth rate of new cases in the province is still under 1%, with 170 (0.4%) new cases reported since yesterday. Of the province’s total cases, 39,474 have been resolved (90.0%) and there have been 2,814 deaths (6.4%). The province has now completed 3,213,336 tests and reports 25,850 tests are currently under investigation. More information here.

FEDERAL

The Government of Canada remains committed to promoting positive mental health for everyone, particularly during these challenging times because of COVID-19. Today, the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Health, announced an investment of $11.5 million in mental health funding for organizations across the country to promote mental health and wellbeing in our communities, and to tackle systemic challenges and barriers, including those faced by Black Canadians. This funding supports community-based programs in mental health promotion, to increase health equity and address the underlying determinants of health. More information here.

The Government of Canada is taking steps to ensure that employers and employees have the resources they need for a safe and responsible return to the workplace. Today, the Honourable Filomena Tassi, Minister of Labour, announced new funding of $2.5 million over two years for the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS), so it can continue to provide valuable guidance to Canadian workers and businesses. On September 9, the Minister of Seniors Deb Schulte, announced the launch of the 2020–21 New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP) Call for Proposals for community-based projects. This year, organizations will be able to apply for funding to support seniors dealing with the pandemic by submitting project proposals that offer specific COVID-19 relief and recovery activities for seniors. PROVINCIAL

To support the mental health and wellbeing of Ontarians during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ontario government is providing an additional $14.75 million to increase access to mental health and addictions services across the province. This funding will help support people from all walks of life during this unprecedented time, including families, young people, children, frontline workers, and Indigenous communities. The governments of Canada and Ontario are investing more than $7.9 million through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership to help farmers improve their business operations and bring more safe, high-quality foods to markets. This funding will support more than 670 projects across Ontario for eligible farmers and agri-food businesses. The funding is in addition to programming launched this year to assist the sector in meeting challenges related to the COVID-19 outbreak. More information here.

TORONTO

The City of Toronto is taking steps to plan and prepare for a resurgence of COVID-19. City Manager Chris Murray today announced that Chief Pegg will resume his role as Toronto’s COVID-19 Incident Commander on a full-time basis. Deputy Fire Chief Jim Jessop will be acting Fire Chief. Prudent and ongoing planning is critical as the city heads into the colder months. Chief Pegg will work closely with Toronto Mayor John Tory and Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Eileen de Villa in coordinating the City’s response to any resurgence. More information here.
